Monetize Your Blog, A Crucial Lesson For Blogging Beginners

The concept of blogging for profits has become rather popular in the last few years. As a result of the AdSense program, affiliate marketing opening up, the ease of creating blogs and the potential to make an extra quid, a rash of blogs are launched everyday on the internet. And a large proportion of these blogs are for the sole purpose of generating an income online.

But very few of the new breed of bloggers actually make a significant income from their brand new blogs.

As a newbie to blogging for profits, there are a few crucial things you must pay attention to so as to improve your chances of success with your blog.

In this article we will talk about monetization of your blog.

How do you make money from a blog? In today's internet world, there are several options open to the blogger looking for methods of making money from their online diary. The more popular methods are

AdSense Blocks: There just is no overstating it. The Google AdSense program is a great and simple way to make money from your blog. Be it a blogger or wordpress or typepad blog, AdSense works!

Of course where you put the AdSense blocks on your blog and the format you use will greatly influence how much income you get from your AdSense campaign.

Affiliate Links: Promoting other peoples' products for a commission. An increasingly popular method of generating an income from blogs, affiliate marketing is an expanding business that has caught the imagination of many.

As a blogger, you can identify a product in your niche i.e the topic you are blogging about. To find products in any niche that has an affiliate program is easy. Just perform a search engine query.

Once you have identified the product you wish to promote, you can apply to the products affiliate program to become a promoter. If you are accepted, you will be given a unique affiliate link which you can place on your blog.

Some affiliate programs are really good and will give you codes for banners and graphics with your affiliate link already incorporated.

If a visitor to your blog buys the product via your affiliate link you get a commission

Selling Banner Space: If you have a high traffic blog, you may opt to sell advertising space to merchants for a fixed monthly fee. The fee is often fixed and does not vary with ad performance.

You will need to have a high traffic blog to be able to command reasonable fees for advertising space

Sell You Own product: The most profitable way to monetize your blog is to develop your own product and promote it on your blog. In this case you get a hundred percent of the revenue generated rather than a commission if you were promoting an affiliate product.

Of course not everyone will have their own product developed and you may not want to go down that route. There is still the possibility of affiliate marketing, as described above, which if done correctly, can deliver a decent amount of revenue to you.

No matter what method of monetization you choose to use on your blog, you will only make money if you have a significant amount of traffic i.e human visitors, coming to your site.

In the next article, we will discuss methods of driving traffic to your blog.

Guest Blogging - How to Increase Your Chances of Getting a "Yes"

Guest blogging is an excellent way to increase traffic to your blog. As blogging is still a pretty fresh medium for many, the rules around how to go about landing guest blogging spots are, well, spotty.

There's one rule in particular that bothers many. Specifically, how long should you wait after you've submitted a guest blog post to hear a response. For freelance writers who are accustomed to querying magazines, for example, it's an age-old question.

For those who are new to freelance writing, it's can be a real "what's the etiquette on this" kind of conundrum. Before this question is addressed, let's back up and list some relatively accepted guidelines around guest blogging.

Guest Blogging Rules

1. Don't Query: As in, don't write a blog owner asking if you "can" send in a post. Just send the post in. Why should you do this? To cut down on the back and forth. Many bloggers, especially successful ones who do it full time, are very busy. They don't have time to trade emails. So send in your post with a note, which will be addressed in just a bit.

2. Read the Blog You Want to Submit To: Know something about the blog you want to submit a guest post to. This will help you craft a better post, and increase your chance of having it accepted.

3. Reference a Previous Post: This is not a must, but it helps to include a link to a previous post the blogger in question has written. It lets them know that you've read their blog -- in detail -- so much so that you referenced it in your post.

4. Submit Original Material: All guest blogging posts should be unique material that you haven't published elsewhere -- not even on your own blog.

How Long Should You Wait for a Response from a Blog You've "Queried"

There are no set standards around this. Some say never expect to hear back. Others say give it a few weeks. I propose a 90-day wait period. Why 90 days? This gives the blogger you've sent your post in to plenty of time to read and decide if they want to publish your post.

Craft a Short Email: Along with your post, send a short email to the blogger; something along the lines of:

Dear Blogger X:

I ran across your blog and find it enlightening and helpful. As I'm in a parallel niche, I wrote the following post -- which I hope you can use -- in response to your 6-26-08 post (this highlights the fact that you've read their blog).

Realizing that time is a precious resource, no immediate response is expected. I'll simply assume that if you haven't published the piece in the next 90 days, it's okay to submit elsewhere, or publish on my own blog.

Thank you in advance for the consideration.

Sincerely,
Your Name
Your Blog Link

Starting a popular, profitable blog is difficult and guest posting can dramatically shorten the road to success. Follow these guidelines and you exponentially increase your chance of getting a "yes" to your guest blogging queries.
